I am thinking of putting a wood stove in my basement. My house does not have a lot of square feet and there is only the one floor above the basement.

This typically will not work. Traditional wood stoves are not intended to serve as a central heating source for an entire floor. Usually not enough of the heat would rise up from the basement to make things warm enough. Instead, you should try to find a location upstairs that serves as your primary living space (where you spend most time) and work to install the fireplace there.
